Mophie Powerstation XXL Review
The Mophie Powerstation XXL is a powerful, 20,000mAh power bank that has a lot to offer. It comes in a rugged aluminum case, which is stronger than the plethora of plastic power banks on the market. Mophie is owned by Zagg Brands, a tech company with several subsidiaries. They produce dozens of different power banks, with a wide variety of capabilities. But the Powerstation XXL is their flagship product.
Capacity & Charging speed
The Powerstation XXL uses an ordinary Micro USB charging cable. It’s compatible with high-voltage, 5-volt USB ports, which includes wall charging blocks as well as most PC ports. When connected to a high-voltage port, it will fully charge overnight from completely dead. That said, there’s no quick charge technology, so you’re still looking for several hours of total charge time.
Also, keep in mind that some older computers, keyboard USB ports, and other accessories only provide a low-voltage USB port. This is just fine for plugging in a mouse, but it won’t provide enough juice to effectively charge your Powerstation XXL.
The Powerstation XXL also provides an option for pass-through charging. In this mode, you can use the Powerstation to power a device, even as it’s being charged. Pass-through charging will automatically prioritize power delivery to your phone or tablet, not the Powerstation. As a result, your battery level should continue to rise even as you’re powering another device. Only one of the Powerstation’s USB ports is designed for pass-through power. Thankfully, it’s clearly marked, so there shouldn’t be any confusion.
All in all, the Powerstation XXL can charge up to 3 devices simultaneously, from 3 different USB ports. It’s compatible with any device that can run on USB power. This includes almost any smartphone or tablet, along with most new laptops and Macbooks. Each USB port provides 2.1 amps of output, enough to keep using your tablet or laptop even while it’s charging.
Look and feel
The Powerstation XXL has an understated look, with an anodized aluminum case with a brushed finish. It’s available in grey or rose gold, which will match a variety of accessories, decors, and fashion choices.
On the long edge of the XXL, you’ll find a row of 4 LED indicators that display the current battery level. By default, they’re not illuminated. However, there’s a small button you can press to display your level of charge. On the short edge, you’ll find 3 USB Type-A ports, which are used for charging all your devices. On the reverse long edge, there’s a small USB Type-C port for charging the Powerstation. A USB to Micro USB port is included in the kit for easy charging.
Durability & Construction
The quality of the Powerstation XXL’s build is better, at first glance than your average battery pack. The anodized aluminum case goes a long way by providing more durability than plastic. It’s not rated for shock or water-resistance, which is a bit of a disappointment. That said, it’s tough enough to stand up to normal, everyday use. And it’s well-constructed, so you don’t need to worry about short-circuits or overheating.
The battery itself is manufacturer-rated for 500 total charge cycles. What this means is that, under normal conditions, the Powerstation XXL will retain 75 percent of its original battery life after 500 charge/discharge cycles. This is right in the sweet spot for lithium polymer batteries and is good enough for years of daily use. If you end up having any early issues, Mophie has got you covered. They offer a 2-year warranty on the Powerstation XXL.
The Powerstation XXL is 6.1 inches long, 3.6 inches wide, and 0.8 inches thick. That’s about the same size as an iPhone, albeit a little bit thicker. It weighs just 7.7 ounces, which makes it comfortable to carry in a backpack or even a pocket.
For air travel, the Powerstation XXL is perfectly legal. It delivers 5 Volts of power, with a capacity of 20,000mAh. This works out to exactly 100 watt-hours, which is the TSA threshold for airworthy battery packs.
Large charging capacity
Approved for air travel
Slick, attractive aluminum case
Can charge 3 devices at once
Not waterproof or shock-proof
No quick charge support
If you’re looking for an exceptionally powerful power bank, the Powerstation XXL offers a lot of bang for your buck. With an impressive, 20,000mAh battery, it provides enough juice for 100 hours of iPhone use. Even on a laptop, you’ll get at least two full charges from your Powerstation.
For more modest needs, you might prefer a smaller power bank. But the Powerstation XXL is relatively compact for its capacity. For most people, it’s an excellent choice.
