Lumina 10000 mAh Ultra Compact Portable Charger Review

The stand-out feature of the Lumina 10000 mAh Portable Charger is undoubtedly its 3-year warranty. It may not be the most visually interesting power bank – but who cares when you’ve got fast charging speeds, portability, and reasonable value to boot? Looks ain’t everything!

Capacity & Charging speed

I have to say I was really impressed with the speed of the Lumina 10000 mAh Portable Charger. I’ve never reviewed a product by Lumia before, but this charger has been getting great reviews on Amazon, so I decided I had to check it out.

As seems standard for power banks in this power category, the Lumia comes with 2 USB output ports. Each port is rated at 2.4A, and as mentioned previously they charge up devices at a rapid rate. Speeds do drop when you charge two devices simultaneously, but that’s to be expected. Recharge speeds are also top-notch via its single input port. Whilst this power bank does not boast Quick Charge technology, I found the speeds to be comparable to some of its more pricier competitors which do boast Quick Charge tech.

The Lumia also comes with the usual electronic safeguards, meaning it will detect the optimum voltage and amperage to deliver to whatever device you plug in.

Look and feel

The Lumina 10000 mAh Portable Charger uses a no-nonsense, low-key design aesthetic. The outer shell is made of a heavy-duty polycarbonate with a matte black finish. It fits comfortably into your hand, and I quite like the finish of the shell. It’s not too slippery like some other power banks and doesn’t feel like you could easily drop it. I should note that this power bank comes in matte black only.

The front side of the power charger has the Lumina logo running horizontally, as well as 4 LED lights to indicate the unit’s charge level on the far side. Tucked on the leading edge, next to the LEDs is a recessed power button. Flip the Lumina on its head and you will find the input and output ports, whilst the tech specs are on the opposite side.

It’s definitely not the sexiest power bank out there, but there’s something to be said for its utilitarian look and feel. I get the impression Lumina spent their money on components and functionality, rather than looks. But that’s not necessarily a bad thing now, is it?

Durability & Construction

Top marks here, as the Lumina 10000 mAh Portable Charger ships with a 3-year manufacturer warranty. (I should note you’ll need to register it with Lumina within a month of purchase.) Warranties are one of the areas that power bank manufacturers seem to really let consumers down – Lumina should be applauded for offering 3 years to its customers.

As mentioned previously, the outer shell is made of heavy-duty polycarbonate, and it certainly feels like it is well-made. All the ports seemed sturdy whilst plugging and unplugging devices. And the power button felt springy and built to last. I’ve only recently got the Lumina, so I can’t confirm its longevity. However, it seems to be getting a huge number of good reviews on Amazon, which is certainly encouraging.

The Lumina 10000 mAh Portable Charger does well again in the portability stakes. I like units with this narrow, longer footprint – as it means I can slip it into my jeans’ pocket comfortably. Measuring 6.1 x 3.9 x 1.1 inches you’d have no problem slipping it into a laptop sleeve, or a medium-sized purse.

The unit weighs 9.6 ounces which is totally manageable for use when out and about. If you have it in your pocket, it will get uncomfortable after a while – but you’ll barely notice it in a bag. Overall, for the power output, the Lumina is towards the lighter/smaller end of the spectrum when comparing it to the competition.
